Why Philosophy?

Human beings have free will.  We can believe and do one thing rather than another.  But this raises the question for us of what we should believe and do.  Are there better and worse reasons for choosing one set of beliefs and actions rather than another? What would constitute well-justified reasons for making a choice in the beliefs we hold and the actions we take?

Welcome to the discipline of philosophy, the hallmark of which is learning to think critically about the choices we make.  This site introduces a variety of sources that can begin your journey in examining your ideas about yourself and the world.  For to forsake the journey is less than human, a sacrifice of free will.  As Socrates, the father of philosophy, said:  “The unexamined life is not worth living.”
